EP 23: Dr. Denise Vidot — An Epidemiologist’s Take On The Endocannabinoid System

As principal investigator of the International COVID-19 Cannabis and Health study, Dr. Denise Vidot’s current cannabis research is incredibly timely. It’s also the latest in a string of cannabis-tied studies she’s done, starting with her first informal investigations as a teen.

Today a cannabis epidemiologist at the University of Miami, Dr. Vidot, first discovered the medical benefits of cannabis after her father got sick. He was diagnosed first with scleroderma, an incurable disease that hardens muscles and skin. Then he received another diagnosis: multiple myeloma cancer. To treat both, he was taking a “cocktail of medications,” Dr. Vidot says, and mostly confined to a wheelchair — until he started using cannabis.

“The memories that I have of my father after diagnosis involve lots of pills,” she said. “And it wasn’t until he focused on plant medicine, including cannabis, that he got rid of those pills.”

The only problem, she says, is that he felt compelled to hide his cannabis use, and he also wasn’t controlling at all for the quality of cannabis; he was “just kind of getting it wherever he could.” Today, as a scientist who’s dedicated to studying cannabis, Dr. Vidot works to understand the many ways cannabis influences human health and educate people on what type and amount of cannabinoids they should be using.

In this episode of “Good Dudes Grow,” Gary and Dr. Vidot talk about her research and why “not all cannabis is created equal.”

What You’ll Learn:

  • How everything from your brain and thyroid gland to your heart and kidneys has “CB1 and CB2 receptors” (and what that means)
  • The way Dr. Vidot has studied the impact of cannabinoids on cancer patients and those living with HIV
  • What her research about the intersection of COVID and cannabis has shown her
  • And much more!

Favorite Quote:

“I just want you to know that if you can hear my voice right now, you have an endocannabinoid system in your body. We learn about the muscular system, the respiratory system, and all these systems starting from elementary school. And I can tell you, as an epidemiologist and a scientist who was trained in a medical school setting, never had I been taught formally about this endocannabinoid system.”
