EP 33: Ellen Lee Scanlon — Pioneering Pot Education For Women

A lot of women struggle to see themselves represented in the way cannabis is sold and talked about. That used to be the case for Ellen Lee Scanlon. A San Francisco native, Ellen is quick to say she’s “always liked weed.” But for a long time, that mainly looked like smoking a joint that someone else — usually a man — was offering.

“It was mostly through a guy; either my husband had it or someone I was dating at the time,” she recalls. “I never really had my hookup.”

Indeed, she’d never considered it as an alternative to pharmaceuticals and other forms of medical care. But after leaving Wall Street and investment banking to work for startups — and more specifically, a California-based women’s healthcare startup — she began to realize how many challenges women faced in the healthcare system. Around that time, she reconnected with an old college friend, April Pride, who’d founded and sold a cannabis company. Together, they realized they were trying to solve the same problems: “Healthcare was just not providing all of what women needed, and cannabis is a treatment for a lot of issues that women suffer from,” Ellen said.

Today, Ellen and April are the co-creators of How to Do the Pot, a pioneering cannabis podcast and education platform for women. In this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary and Ellen talk about her journey to getting here, why she’s made women-centered cannabis education her mission, and how her cannabis use changed during COVID.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How women’s monthly hormone changes interact with CBD and cannabis, and how Ellen uses cannabis to help treat her endometriosis
  • The sexist reason 80% of women have been given a too-large dose of prescription medication, and how that corresponds to CBD and THC doses
  • What Ellen has seen cannabis and CBD do for women with autoimmune disorders
  • And much more!

Favorite Quote:

“Everyone chooses to use cannabis differently, but I believe everyone who uses it is using it for medicine of some kind.”
